On July 3rd, the Pierre area community suffered an immeasurable loss, the loss of a hero. Lee Weber died in the same manner in which he lived his life, a hero. A day of fun and celebration turned tragic when Lee jumped into the Missouri River near Fort Pierre, SD to save the life of his young son, who entered the water into a strong current.
After making contact with his son, Lee struggled to overcome the current and was pulled under water. His son was rescued by a neighboring boat thanks to Lee's efforts. Despite a comprehensive search effort, Lee has not been seen since. He was only 37 years old.
In life, we make choices as to how we will live our lives and the paths we take. Lee chose to live his as a hero. Lee was a hero for service to his country and state since 2001 in the South Dakota National Guard. Lee began his service with the 211th Engineer Company in Madison, SD in 2001 and, most recently, held the rank of E-7 with the 153rd Engineer Battalion in Huron, SD. Lee deployed with the National Guard to Iraq in 2004-2005 and again to Afghanistan in 2009-2010.
In his civilian life, Lee was the Chief Deputy Sheriff for the Hughes County Sheriff's Office in Pierre. Lee began his career with the Sheriff's Office in 2015, quickly gaining the respect of those he worked with, and was promoted to Chief Deputy in 2019. During his time with the Sheriff's Office, Lee was a Task Force Officer for the U.S. Marshals Service Pierre Area Fugitive Task Force. Lee also served as the Deputy Emergency Manager for Hughes and Stanley Counties in 2019. Lee's constant smile, positivity and kindness will be missed by all his colleagues.
Most importantly, Lee was a hero to his family, every day and in his very last moments. Lee is loved and missed by his wife, Wendy, his six beautiful children: LaToya, Magnus, Amadeo, Lexinn, Emalee and Samuel and his entire family. Lee was everything a great husband, father and son should be. He is a role model to so many.
